Physical Therapy for Soccer Players

Soccer Physical Therapy

Like any team sport, soccer players can’t succeed on their own. Stellar teamwork and dedication to training on and off the field create a championship team. The players should take credit for every pass, save and goal but the role of support personnel behind the scenes can’t be ignored. Coaches, for example, can sculpt a winning team while a great sports physical therapist keeps players in fighting shape. Professional and college-level soccer players are typically familiar with the benefits of physical therapy throughout the season, but soccer players of all levels can benefit from establishing a relationship with a good sports PT.

You probably think about PTs as the professionals that help you recover from injury and we certainly do, but we also offer much more to our soccer players. Working with a physical therapist is an excellent way to boost performance, and prevent and recover from injuries that may bench you unexpectedly. Let’s start with the obvious, injury rehabilitation.

Both contact and noncontact soccer injuries can happen during practice and play. Injuries even occur in the training room. Ligament sprains or tears like ACL or MCL tears, muscle strains and contusions, fractures, concussions and foot injuries are just some of the injuries that soccer players can face. How you address these injuries can make the difference between returning to the game as soon as possible and dealing with long-lasting symptoms that continually interfere with your play.

A sports physical therapist is trained in the latest evidence-based treatment strategies for conservative and post-operative rehabilitation of musculoskeletal and neurologic injuries like ligament tears, muscle strains and concussions. We won’t keep you off the field longer than is necessary, but we won’t release you too early either. Evidence-based care helps us assess your readiness to return to play so you can get back to the game with as little chance of re-injury as possible.

We love rehabilitating athletes but we love preventing their injuries even more. Athletes are tough, it makes them good at their job but it can also make them prone to ignoring subtle signs of impending injury. Some injuries happen suddenly, without warning, but other times our body sends us warning signals ahead of time such as increased tightness or achiness in an area. Athletes afraid of telling their coaches about these symptoms for fear of being benched should not be afraid to tell their physical therapist. A great sports PT will not bench an athlete unless it is absolutely necessary. We will work with you to keep you as active as possible while taking steps to address these symptoms before they become an injury.

Another way we prevent injuries is by screening athletes. With an athlete screen, we can assess your risk for common soccer-related or training-related injuries. By examining your strength, flexibility, coordination, speed, power, motor control and more, we can identify weak links in your training and conditioning program that could put you at greater risk for injury. We can create a custom training program to address these areas of weakness to make you more resilient against injury and boost performance. When indicated, we can work with your coaches and athletic trainers as well to ensure your whole team is on board.

The off-season is a great time to undergo a general screen with a sports physical therapist. You will have the time and energy to dedicate to a progressive training program that will not interfere with competitive play but it will prepare you for pre-season work and finally competition season.

If you weren’t convinced you needed a great physical therapist on your team beforehand, we hope you are now. At Evolve Physical Therapy we apply an individualized approach to athlete assessment and rehabilitation and our goal is to help you become the best player you can be.
